Weight plays a bigger role than you think
At first glance, karting seems primarily about driving skill and courage. But did you know that weight significantly impacts your speed and performance on the track ? Whether you're new to karting or competing, a few extra kilos can make the difference between victory and defeat.
Why does weight matter in karting?
A kart has a relatively low engine power. This makes the power-to-weight ratio crucial. The lighter the kart and driver combination, the faster the kart accelerates and the better it corners.
How much difference does it really make?
A rough rule of thumb:
➡️ Every 10 kilograms of extra weight can save 0.1 to 0.3 seconds per lap , depending on the track and the kart.
That might not sound like much, but on a 10-lap track, it quickly means a deficit of several seconds. And in racing, that's huge.
Examples on the track
Couple:
-
Rider A weighs 60 kg
-
Rider B weighs 80 kg
-
Both drive the same kart and the same driving style
Rider A will then accelerate faster on average and navigate technical corners more easily. Rider B will have to work harder to maintain the same pace, especially on the exit of corners.
How do kart tracks handle weight differences?
To keep things fair in competitions, many leagues work with:
-
Weight correction (for example with extra lead weights in the kart)
-
Classification by weight in competitions
-
Time handicaps in fun races
At KartKings we always make sure that competitions are as fair as possible, so that skill outweighs weight 😉
Can you win as a heavier rider?
Certainly. Weight is only one factor. Other determining factors are:
-
Line selection and steering technique
-
Braking at the right time
-
Cornering
-
Experience and focus
A heavier rider with better skills can still achieve faster lap times than a lighter beginner.
Weight counts – but technique counts double
Yes, weight does matter in karting. But it's not the be-all and end-all. Technique, insight, and courage make just as much of a difference. So whether you're light or heavy, you can always get faster!
